Discussion Questions & Applications:

  1. Do you struggle more with overtly harsh words or subtle-harsh words (like sarcasm or passive aggressive comments)?
  2. Why does scripture say so much about the words we use? What’s the big deal?
  3. What do “life-giving” words look like? (vs. empty flattery words)
  4. Think about these two quotes: “Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.” Benjamin Franklin...“In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
  5. Why/How is it that life-taking words come from an arrogant and insecure heart?
  6. Given this, how is the Gospel the solution for the words we use (both in our use of life-taking words and actively using life-giving words)? (i.e. As we believe in our secure value in Jesus and other people’s value as being made in God’s image, we will no longer have to use our words to create our value or devalue others).

Quotes:

  • The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone. - Harriet Beecher Stowe
  • Much unhappiness has come into the world because of bewilderment and things left unsaid. - Fyodor Dostoevsky
  • Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. - Benjamin Franklin
  • “In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Words can sometimes, in moments of grace, attain the quality of deeds. - Elie Wiesel
  • Kind words do not cost much. They never blister the tongue or lips. They make other people good-natured. They also produce their own image on men’s souls, and a beautiful image it is. - Blaise Pascal
