Words of Wisdom 1: Words We Hear

Passage: Proverbs 2:1-22

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Proverbs

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: hope, proverbs, wisdom, words

We have no truly silent moments where no messages whatsoever are entering our hearts. Throughout our lives we hear messages from the outside as well as the inside that try to mold our reality: “You will never be good enough”; “You will never get better”; “He is the reason you are miserable”; “God cannot be trusted”; “Look out for #1”. In the midst of being constantly surrounded by different “gospels” proclaiming truth we have Jesus, The Word who has become flesh, to speak and be Truth for an into us, telling us that we are simultaneously in desperate need as well as desperately loved, accepted, fulfilled and complete in Him. So, what words are you internalizing? To whom are you listening? To whom belong the words of Life?

Discussion Questions & Applications:

1) Why do words matter so much to us? (See John 1)

2) We hear voices that tell us:

  1.    a) What To Do -- give examples of this.

   How are these “smooth words”?

  1.    b) Who We Are -- give examples of this.

3) Regarding “value words”:

  1.    a) Why do discouraging words devastate you?
  2.    b) Why do encouraging words elevate you?

4) We hear words that come from outside of us and inside of us:

   Which one carries more weight?

Do your “inner voices” tend toward telling you:

  1.    a) you are amazing and don’t need that much Jesus.
  2.    b) you are a wretch and a huge disappointment.

5) What does God say about our identity and value?

How did/do his actions back us his words?

How can believing God’s life-giving words (the “Gospel”) impact our actions (v.20)?

Quotes:

  • (Tom Brady in USA Today article, 5/01/18) "I think what I'm learning, as you get older, is it comes from within — the joy, the happiness, those things come from inside,” he continued. “To seek that from others, to seek that from outside influences — people you work with — people that cheer against you or cheer with you, I feel like it comes from within for me."
  • (Taylor Swift in CNN article, 5/11/18) - "A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media, and it caught on," Swift said, according to video tweeted by a fan. "Then, a lot of people were calling me a lot of things on social media. And I went through some really low times for awhile because of it. I went through some times when I didn't know if I was going to get to do this anymore."
