Wise Teachability

Passage: Proverbs 1:20-33

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Proverbs

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: failure, freedom, hope, repentance, wisdom

In the deafening noise of our streets, God calls out wisdom that brings life, hope, freedom and security. But so often are stubbornly unteachable, turning a deaf ear to him as we follow the fickle and self-centered wisdom of theorld which leads to fear, pain and, ultimately, death. In his passion and power to not accept no for an answer, He sent his Son who became Wisdom Incarnate not simply to teach us truth but to BE Truth for us which leads to His Spirit indwelling us and leading us into life as he took on our falsehood which led him to his death.

Central Text: Proverbs 1:20-33 ESV

Response: Prayer of Repentance (from The Valley of Vision)

O God of Grace,

You have imputed our sin to Christ

And have imputed His righteousness to our souls.

Clothing us with a bridegroom’s robe.

But often in our walk we return to our rags.

Stand in filthy garments.

Boast in false works.

Grant us each day to repent and believe

the exceeding depth of our sinfulness

the exceeding glory of Christ

the exceeding beauty of holiness.

the exceeding wonder of grace.

Benediction: Jude 1:24-25 ESV

Post-Service Text: Colossians 2:2-3 ESV

Questions:

1) How do you hear God’s voice?
What gets in the way (the “noisy streets”)?
If you hear something, how do you know if it’s him or not?

2) This passage does a beautiful poetic dance of personifying wisdom: Lady Wisdom crying out to us, to help, protect and lead us. What do you think of this literary tool?

a) What is she telling us?

b) What does “reproof” mean? How/Why does God done that?

c) Why is it so hard to be teachable? ... to repent?

d) What is the blessing that comes with repentance?
How is this finally and fully fulfilled in and by Jesus? (v 23)

3) This makes it seem like there’s a huge “I told you so!” when we mess up. What do you think about that? How does Lady Wisdom (NOT God) “mock” you when you fall?

4) Why is “complacency” such a bad thing (v. 32)? What is it?

5) What does “dwelling secure” really mean (if you listen to and follow Lady Wisdom)? Don’t really rough things still happen to those who follow?
