Too Good To Be True

Passage: Titus 3:4-7

Speaker: Walt Childs

Series: GRACE DNA

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: good news, gospel, gratitude, remembrance

This is the beginning of a 4 week series on Grace DNA at GBV. Our first essential in our DNA is the simple truth that the gospel is good news. The gospel of Jesus is good news because it tells of his rescue of those who are lost. Of his offer of undeserved grace. Of abundant mercy. Of never ending forgiveness. It can sometimes seem too good to be true. But it is true. Reminding ourselves of the beauty of God's story of redemption is always recommended and can renew our passion for the good news.

4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Is there anything you can do to make God love you more?
    1. ...or to make God love you less?
  2. How does this play out in real-life when you feel like you are a disappointment to God?
    1. or “better” (more loved) than others?
  3. Why is the gospel sometimes just “OK” news?
  4. Why would we say that the gospel message can seem too good to be true?
  5. List some ways that we fail to continually live in this good news as we fall into:
    1. Performance Driven Religion:
    2. Apathetic Spirituality:
    3. Gospel-Amnesia:

Quotes:

  • "So then, have we nothing to do to obtain this righteousness?  No, nothing at all. For this righteousness comes by doing nothing, hearing nothing, knowing nothing, but rather in knowing and believing this only.....that Christ has gone to the right hand of the Father, not to become our judge but to become for us our wisdom, our righteousness, our holiness, our salvation.  Now God sees no sin in us, for in this heavenly righteousness sin has no place." - Martin Luther
  • "Between his first coming to win us and his last coming to restore us, we live by faith in him.  When we believe and rely on Jesus' work and record (rather than ours) for our relationship to God, his healing kingdom power comes upon us and begins to work through us.  Christ gives us a radically new identity, freeing us from both self-righteousness and self-condemnation. This liberates us to accept people we once excluded, and to break the bondage of things (even good things) that once drove us." - Timothy Keller
  • “If our minds are not being daily renewed by the truths of the gospel, we will not be able to discern and walk in the will of God” - Jeff Vanderstelt
