ALL: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and buried.

He descended to the dead. The third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit. The holy Church. The communion of saints. The forgiveness of sins. The resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. We all live in different and intertwined sphere of life (job, family, friends)
    1. How do you find yourself living and behaving differently in each?
  2. This passage sets the spheres of “flesh” and “Spirit” in opposition.
    1. What are ways we “set our minds” on the flesh sphere?
    2. What are ways we “set our minds” on the Spirit sphere?
    3. Why is it so hard to set our minds on the Spirit rather than on flesh?
    4. What is the result of a mind set on flesh?
      1. What does that truly mean?
      2. Why does it lead there?
  3. What is the result of a mind set on Spirit?
    1. What does that truly mean?
    2. Why does it lead there?)
  4. How does this give hope as this world and our bodies inevitably fail?
  5. Ultimately, being God’s child is actually about the Spirit dwelling in us, bringing his sphere/realm to me rather than me going to him.
    1. How is that different? Freeing?
  6. Talk about these “ways of living” in the Spirit-Sphere (and how they aren’t stages or steps, but perpetually essential cornerstones)
    1. “Wretched man that I am” - seeing my sin.
    2. “Who will deliver me” - fleeing and clinging to Christ.
    3. “Setting my mind” - Following Christ
  7. The Gospel never tells us what to do without providing the HOW.
    1. What is the POWER that enables us to mind-set on Christ?
  8. The Gospel isn’t just about me and never sits dormant inside of us, but always propels outward. How does this passage push us outward?

QUOTES:

  • “You do not need to swindle yourself into thinking that you are strong. You can face your weakness with joy because you know that you have been given grace for that weakness; grace that is not a thing, but a person—the Holy Spirit, who makes you the place where he dwells in power.” - Paul David Tripp
  • “I regularly invite the Holy Spirit to witness to me regarding who Jesus is, what he has done, and who I am because of his work. If the thoughts or beliefs I am having do not line up, the Spirit makes that known to me as he brings to remembrance what is true of God and of me because of the gospel.” - Jeff Vanderstelt
  • “When we notice ugly things happening in us and the ugliness disturbs us, it’s usually a sign that the Holy Spirit is at work.” - Scott Sauls
  • “The Holy Spirit of God will mold you into the person you were made to be. I don't want my life to be explainable without the Holy Spirit. I want people to look at my life and know I couldn't be doing this by my own power. I want to live in such a way that I am desperate for Him to come through.” - Francis Chan
  • When you read about his goodness, it develops peace in you. When you read about his forgiveness, it develops relief in you. You shake off your guilty fears. When you read about his forgiveness, it develops generosity and mercy in you. When you read about his holiness, it develops conviction of sin and humility in you. Don’t you see? Only when the Spirit of God is doing that do you see real access happening. Only then.” - Tim Keller
