MESSAGE TITLE: The Hope of Heaven

CENTRAL TEXT: 1 Peter 3:8-22

ILLUSTRATION: ROTK - Beyond

RESPONSE: PRAYER: The Peace Prayer (by St. Francis of Assisi)

ALL: Lord, make us an instrument of Thy peace;

Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is error, truth;

Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy.

 O Divine Master, Grant that we may not so much seek. To be consoled, as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To withhold, as to forgive To be loved as to love.

 For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.  And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. What are some examples you have experienced of persecution in your life?
  2. How did you react to the situation?

Note: Most times, our reaction to suffering or persecution is “fight or flight,” either we stand and fight (physically or with words) or we run away (physically or with silence)

  1. In light of this passage, was your reaction based on your fear or your faith?
  2. How might God’s promises to his children (ultimate vindication for all the wrongs done to you) motivate you to pursue peace in the midst of suffering/persecution?
