DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What motivates Paul to see the change in plans (Macedonia) as a “triumphal procession?”
  2. Why do you think Paul uses the imagery of aroma and fragrance in this text?
  3. No sense remains in the memory like scent does. Do you have an aroma that is tied to an experience or person that you’ll never forget?
  4. What are some of the scents we chase each day that ultimately lead to death apart from Christ?
  5. What are some of the smells in our lives that we either mask with good works / religion or are simply unaware of?
  6. When referring to the aroma of Christ, what does Paul mean when he says “to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life.”?
  7. In what ways can the aroma of Christ feel like death to even believers?
  8. If someone said: “If you had enough faith you would avoid suffering.” How would you respond to them?
  9. What does it mean to be led in a triumphal entry (v.14)? How does this tie into the Lent season where we look ahead to the Cross? Give examples in your life?
  10. The message of the gospel is a message of life to some and a message of condemnation to those who reject it. How do we present the gospel authentically even though it is offensive?
  11. What do you think Paul meant when he said he didn’t want to be a “peddler” of the Gospel? How can a church guard itself from peddling God’s word for profit?
  12. Describe the difference of applying the aroma of Christ to your life v.s. Becoming the aroma?
  13. If friends were to describe your actions and attitudes this week, what would your “aroma” be?
  14. How do you think people in Brevard would describe our church? Does our impact in our community carry the aroma of Christ?
  15. What steps can you take to make sure you carry the aroma of Christ every day?
