Shame-Less

Passage: Isaiah 50:4-11

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Isaiah

Category: Grace Brevard

Jesus, The Suffering Servant, perfectly accepts our disgrace on our behalf, coming out of the grave vindicated by The Father and standing on our behalf, able to hear our cries for help and, by his words, sustain us in our weariness. (I’ll emphasize that Jesus has taken our disgrace on his shoulders and now, since he’s been victorious, The Father has vindicated him and he know stands on our behalf, ready and able to hear our cries and speak words of rescue)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. Guilt is based on what you’ve done (“I did something bad”) while Shame is based on who you think you are (“I AM something bad”). How do we easily get these two mixed up?
  2. How do you deal with shame?
    1. Where does shame take you?
  3. Down deep shame and disgrace comes from believing a lie about yourself...what is that lie?
    1. Where does it come from?
  4. How does the passage (see v. 6) show the disgrace Jesus took for us? Think about that for a second...how in the world can God himself submit himself to shame and disgrace? Why would he do that? How does having a God who voluntarily accepted disgrace help us when we feel shame and disgrace?
  5. Shame comes from believing a lie about your core character, but Jesus has been given the perfect words (and Word) (see v. 4) to counteract the lie...what is that word (are those words)?
  6. Look through some of the “Who You Are In Christ” verses (attached) and pick out ones that really speak to your heart.

QUOTES:

  • “If we can share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding,  shame can't survive.” - Brene Brown
  • “Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change.” - Brene Brown
  • “We are storytellers. We yearn to tell and hear stories of goodness and beauty, and this is the echo of God’s intention. We long for our stories to be about joy, not just reflections of what we believe but of who we are, who we long to be…But shame wants very much to infect every element of the mind in order to distort God’s story and offer another narrative.” - Curt Thompson
  • “We deeply long for connection, to be seen and known for who we are without rejection. But we are terrified of the vulnerability that is required for that very contact. And shame is the variable that mediates that fear of rejection in the face of vulnerability. But in the Trinity we see something that we must pay attention to: God does not leave. The loving relationship shared between Father, Son and Spirit is the ground on which all other models of life and creativity rest. In this relationship of constant self-giving, vulnerable and joyful love, shame has no oxygen to breathe.” - Curt Thompson
  • “Shame… is that sense of unease with yourself at the heart of your being.’ We know there is something wrong with us, but we can’t admit it or identify it. There is a deep restlessness, which can take various forms – guilt and striving to prove ourselves, rebellion and the need to assert our independence, compliance and the need to please others. Something is wrong, and we may know the effects, but we fall short of understanding the true causes.” - David Atkinson
