Quiet Expressions of a Deep Faith

Passage: 1 Kings 18:1-16

Speaker: Ben Seneker

Series: General

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: service, culture, gifts, faithful, incarnational, obadiah

Obadiah was called to be faithful in an unfaithful system. Called to a different ministry than Elijah ("small" vs "big", private vs public) And invited to lean into the Lord and grow in his faith. We are not all called to serve the Lord in the same way, but we're all called to serve the Lord. Jesus provides all we need to serve him, even while we do so imperfectly. He is faithful when we are not.

PRELUDE: Everybody Loves Raymond

CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 108

MUSIC: Sovereign Over Us, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Good Good Father

CONFESSION & ASSURANCE

ALL: Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon (from Psalm 103):

LEADER: The LORD is merciful and gracious,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

As a father has compassion for his children,

so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him.

For he knows how we were made; he remembers that we are dust.

But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting

on those who fear him,

ALL: Please forgive and help us, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

CENTRAL TEXT:  1 Kings 18:1-16

1 After many days the word of the LORD came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.” 2 So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly, 4 and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.” 6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself. 7 And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?” 8 And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’” 9 And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10 As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here,’ he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you. 11 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’ 12 And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the LORD will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the LORD from my youth. 13 Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred men of the LORD’s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.” 15 And Elijah said, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.” 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.

MESSAGE: Quiet Expressions of a Deep Faith

NICENE CREED

LEADER: Join me in the Nicene Creed.

ALL: We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father. Through Him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven; He became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and was made human. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried. The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will never end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. He proceeds from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. He spoke through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the world to come. Amen.

BENEDICTION: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
