Promises, Promises

Passage: Genesis 12:1-3

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: General

Category: Grace Brevard, General

Our lives are governed by promises: to love and cherish; to stay in my lane; to clean up after myself; to protect; to tell the truth; to pay this money back. As we go into the new year, we all want to somehow “be better” and “do better.” But our promises will always, to some degree be self-centered and their fulfillment destined to come up short. But Jesus’ aren’t, and will not! From the very beginning of time God has made promises (“covenants”) and has assured us by his own blood that he will fulfill not just his end of the promise, but ours as well. Because of this we can make bold and faithful commitments to Him, One Another and even ourselves based upon his grace, his strength and his forgiveness in our failures...commitments not just to “be better” but to live out the blessings He has given us.

Prayer of Confession (adapted from The Service for the Lord’s Day)

ALL:  O Merciful God,

We confess that we have not loved you with

our whole heart, mind, and strength

And have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

In your great mercy, forgive us,

renew us, compel us and lead us,

That we may delight in your will

walk in your ways; find joy in your Word.

Through the finished work of Jesus.

Amen

Message Title: Promises, Promises

Central Text: Genesis 12:1-3

1 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Quotes

  • “If I am a field that contains nothing but grass-seed, I cannot produce wheat. Cutting the grass may keep it short: but I shall still produce grass and no wheat. If I want to produce wheat, the change must go deeper than the surface. I must be ploughed up and resown” - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
  • “If our minds are not being daily renewed by the truths of the gospel, we will not be able to discern and walk in the will of God” - Jeff Vanderstelt
  • “Jesus says in the gospel that everyone is wrong, everyone is loved, and everyone is called to recognize this and change.”  - Timothy J. Keller
