New Year, New Us (Click Here For Resources)

Passage: John 13:31-35

Speaker: Andrew Kerhoulas

Series: General

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: new commandment, the love of christ, love for one another, public witness

With the onset of a new year, we long for all kinds of new things. The particular kind of newness Jesus has for his people is to love one another as he loved us. The commandment he gave all those years ago is still freshly needed in our age riven with hatred and acrimony. Standing out for love is part of his calling on our lives in this new year.

PRELUDE:  Love Is A Verb

PRAYER: The Love of Jesus (The Valley of Vision)

ALL: O great God, sender of Christ. Help us to approach Thee with deepest reverence, Not with presumption. Not with fear but with holy boldness. Thou art beyond the grasp of our understanding, but not beyond that of Your love.

Our hearts melt at the love of Jesus. We are never so known as we’re known in Him. All lost yet gained when lost unto Him

 Let the mighty tide of His everlasting love; cover the rocks of our sin and care;

Making us fruitful by living to that love. Overflowing to our brothers, sisters, neighbors. Continually transformed with the beauty of Christ.

O Divine Spirit work in us the rest of the Gospel

Compel us in gratitude to holiness and good works.

MESSAGE TITLE: “New Year, New Us”

CENTRAL TEXT: John 13:31-35

CONFESSION OF FAITH: The Apostles’ Creed”

ALL: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy universal Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

  • What is the setting for Jesus’ new commandment? How does its setting change the way it’s received?
  • What is new about Jesus’ commandment? How does it change the scope of love from Leviticus 19:18? (“Love your neighbor as yourself”)
  • What makes this command difficult to obey for you, personally?
  • What resources do we have in the gospel to love a fellow Christian with whom you disagree? Is God calling you to restore a fractured relationship?
  • Did one of the practical suggestions stick with you? Is there something you could try to implement this week?
