John - the Light

Passage: John 1:1-14

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: John: Come and See

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: creation, salvation, light

THEME: The Light: In the beginning (which is how John begins this gospel) creation was deep darkness, and God said let their be light. For John and his readers Darkness represented evil, pain and suffering while Light was the revealer of flaws (sins) and the source of life. But, like the LOGOS, light wasn’t a mere concept or morality, it was a person who became flesh in order to carry us into the light, light up our darkness, and even make us children of the light as we go out as lights to the world around us

CENTRAL TEXT:

John 1:1-13
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Gen 1:2-3
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Rev 21:23
And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.
