John - Seeing Jesus

Passage: John 12:1-26

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: John: Come and See

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: love, worship, sacrifice

Theme: As we return to the Book of John we find Jesus in the final week of his life, which dramatically reveals hearts: what they truly think about Jesus and what their motivations are. We find curious outsiders, sacrificial insiders and treacherous friends. Jesus himself, in these final hours, becomes increasingly clear that he has come to be the perfect sacrifice, and calls his followers to likewise live their renewed lives in the same way, which draws many deeper in while propelling others to darkness. Are we followers of Jesus because of what he can do for me, or because he is the Son of God and worthy of our worship?

SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Read through John 12:1-26
Take special note of the reactions people had to Jesus.
What sticks out to you?

WHY all the different reactions?

What different reactions do people have to Jesus today?

WHY? What creates those reactions?

What causes ANY reaction we have (to anything)?

Mary and the Nard - Describe the situation.

John is oddly specific to say that the smell filled the house. Smell has a very visceral reaction (deep; emotional, not just intellectual)

What impact would the perfume have on the group.

Add that to Jesus saying WHY the nard was being used. (pre-burial).

We see several diverse “worship-reactions” in this passage
Sit with; Serve; Sacrifice; Sing
How are these manifest today?

One of our reactions to Jesus (and the Gospel) today is boredom?
Why is that?
What is the cure for that?
