John - Feasts and Festivals (Palm Sunday) - click for resources

Passage: John 12:12-19

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: John: Come and See

Category: Grace Brevard

THEME: Palm Sundays marks the beginning of Holy Week as we march with the Lord into the Last Supper, Gethsemane, the trial, crucifixion and ultimately the resurrection. But this week means so much more than we realize. Though Palm Sunday begins this incredible week, God began preparing us for this week 2000 years earlier while Israel was enslaved in Egypt by rescuing his people through the Passover and instituting several feasts and festivals that would point, over the span of 2000 years, to this very week.

Sermon Discussion Questions:

  • Recall and summarize the First Passover from Egypt (book of Exodus).
    • What was the Lamb for?
    • Why Unleavened Bread?
  • There were well over 1,000,000 people that made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem for Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Why did they make this trip once a year? Why was it so important?
  • God regularly uses object lessons and symbolism to bring home a much deeper point. Here are a few from this Holy Week – which one sticks out to you the most:
    • Palm Sunday and Jesus Triumphal Entry being “Lamb Selection Day”
    • Singing and Reciting the Hallel from Psalm 118 (“Hosanna…Blessed is he who…”)
    • The Crucifixion matching up with “Tamid”
      • Perpetual, Core Sacrifice
      • Pure Spotless Lamb (“Behold, the Lamb of God”)
      • Grain Offering (“this is my body, broken for you”)
      • Drink Offering (“this is my blood, shed for you”)
    • Feast of Unleavened Bread = Jesus as the “Bread of Life” “planted” for us
    • Resurrection happened during the Festival of FirstFruits (1 Cor 15:20-23)

  • Why is it significant that all of these feasts and festivals line up with Holy Week?
  • Read the final Hallel together: Psalm 118:20-29
    • What sticks out to you?
    • How does it point (1000 years in advance) specifically to Jesus?

  • In all of this, think about these things:
    • Is there a character of God that has been clarified?
    • Is there a personal application that comes to mind?
    • Is there a sin that has been highlighted that you need to repent of?
