John - The Glory (click for resources)

Passage: John 17:1-5

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: John: Come and See

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: glory

Jesus' pre-creation Glory was live out in his Perfect Life which in turn glorified the Father. Now the Father will glorify Jesus in His death so that we could truly know the True God.

CENTRAL PASSAGE
John 17
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Have you been publicly celebrated?
Has your name ever been up in lights, or name announced through a loudspeaker (not including when you were in High School and over the intercom you heard “Will Brian Land please come to the principal’s office.”)

Read through the passage and talk about major words or short phrases that stick out to you.

We all instinctively know what “glory” is -- but it super complicated to actually define...talk through what you think it might mean.

Why do we want to be recognized for our accomplishments?

What do you try to hang your glory-hat on?  (resume’, appearance, knowledge, kids...)

Philippians 2 :6-7 though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men...”
   ---- How and Why did Jesus get “de-glorified” when he was born as man?
  ---- How is The Cross the ultimate glory-killer?
  ---- And the empty tomb the greatest glory-maker?

What do you think about the idea that our anger, frustration, insecurity etc come from an attack on our “glory” -- either not getting the glory we feel like we deserve or somebody trying to strip down our “glory”?

17:3 is an apex verse - How is this a definition of eternal life?

What does Eternal Life have to do with Glory?

What does it mean that YOU are glorious?

Read and talk about 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
    --- AND the CSLewis quote from Weight of Glory
What do you think of Piper’s glory quote “God is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in Him."

How can we live out the Glory God has given us?

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Zephaniah 3:14
Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion;
shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
O daughter of Jerusalem!
15 The LORD has taken away the judgments against you;
he has cleared away your enemies.
The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst;
you shall never again fear evil.
16 On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
“Fear not, O Zion;
let not your hands grow weak.
17 The LORD your God is in your midst,
a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.
