DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. Fear of Abandonment
    1. Think about a relationship where you have to perpetually “earn” their love. What is that like? What are the impacts?
    2. Look through the list Paul gives us in 8:35. How can outside forces try to convince us that we are no longer loved by and belong to God
    3. How can “inside forces” (my own heart and behavior) try to convince me that I’m no longer loved?
    4. How does feeling abandoned by God impact our behavior?
  2. Security of Love
    1. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” - What does it mean for God to be “FOR” you?
    2. What’s your thoughts on “Once saved, always saved”?
    3. Talk about how our adoption (salvation) is dependent on God’s faithfulness rather than ours. What does that have to do with our “eternal security”?
    4. If it was 100% grace that saved us, why do we quickly turn to works to retain our salvation?
    5. Why might it be hard to really believe in eternal security?
    6. How is giving us Jesus proof of God’s steadfast Love?
  3. Uber-Conquerors
    1. If you really knew that Jesus’ love (and your salvation) wasn’t dependent on your behavior, would that make your more fearless and bold, or more reckless in sin?
    2. How would believing in God’s steadfast intimacy with us propel us outward to be vulnerable and real with others?

QUOTES:

  • “God does not love you to the degree that you are like Jesus. Rather, God loves you to the degree that you are in Jesus. And that’s 100 percent.” - Rankin Wilbourne

  • “This is the love you have been looking for all of your life. This is the only love that can’t let you down. This is bombproof love. Not friend-love, not personal acclaim, not married love, and not even romantic love – it is this love that you are after, underneath all your pursuit of those others.” - Tim Keller

  • “He loved us not because we were lovable, but because He is Love.” – C.S. Lewis

  • “The cross guarantees that even in your darkest moment God will never turn in disgust and walk away. There is no rebellion, no weakness, no foolishness, no evil of heart that the cross can't defeat and grace can't transform.” - Paul David Tripp

  • “God does not love us because Christ died for us; Christ died for us because God loved us.” - John Stott
