Hebrews: With (Royal High Priest)

Passage: Hebrews 5:1-10

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Hebrews: Fulfilled in Christ

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: creation, eden, sacrifice, temple, priest, tabernacle, he gets us

God's original intent in Creation was to make us to be with Him, one another and the rest of creation. Our rebellion caused infinite schism in all of our relationships (especially between us and God). It is this division that God has endlessly worked to repair, first through human priests and his tabernacle/temple, all the while knitting together the redemption history where Jesus himself, both God and Man, would become the Temple, the Priest and the Sacrifice. In these divine/human roles Jesus entered the deepest of our mess, and yet was without sin...which means that he wholly understands our broken hearts AND is wholly able to renew them. Eternally.

CENTRAL TEXT

1 For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

“You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;

6 as he says also in another place,

“You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • When has it felt like nobody understands what you are going through?
  • What’s it like when someone truly “gets”you?
  • Have you gone through something really hard and felt like God either wasn’t good/loving enough to want to help or not powerful enough to be able to help? How did you deal with it?
  • What does verse 7 say about Jesus’ prayers (and God’s response)?
    • Where did this prayer take place?
    • God heard...but what was his answer?
  • How is it that Jesus had to “learn obedience”? Didn’t he already know? Why did he have to go through such enormous suffering? How does his suffering impact how he relates to us?
  • What was the point / function of the biblical priests?
  • How then is Jesus our infinitely better priest? (He didn’t “make” a sacrifice but WAS the sacrifice...AND he totally understands us to our depths)
