Hebrews: Sharpest

Passage: Hebrews 4:12-13

Series: Hebrews: Fulfilled in Christ

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: christ, scripture, word

We typically interact with Scripture the same way an 8th grader interacts with a frog in science class: we look, dissect, find some things fascinating, somethings confusing and some things totally disgusting. But Scripture is not an artifact to investigate but a dialogue; as we read it, it reads us. Scripture and the power of Jesus looks deeper into our hearts than even we can, revealing an enormous brokenness as well revealing the infinite gift of life, love and hope we have in Christ.

CENTRAL PASSAGE:

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  • When is the motivation for a behavior more important than the actually behavior?
  • What do you think is the point of Scripture?
  • Go through this passage -- what are a few words that really stand out to you?
  • What is a word or two in the passage that you think summarizes the whole thing?
  • How do you react to being totally “uncovered” and seen by God?
  • Why does God care about the heart and not just the behavior?
  • Does behavior matter?
  • What’s the connection between heart and behavior?
  • Talk about how we don’t just read Scripture, but Scripture reads us...and how it is much more common for us to dissect Scripture and Jesus like an academic experiment rather than truly interacting with it/him.
  • Ask / Invite Scripture to challenge you
    • What sin (selfishness) does this reveal?
    • What is something in me that this challenges me to do or change?
    • What does this passage reveal about God? How can this draw me into worship?
