Hebrews: My Exodus

Passage: Hebrews 11:23-31

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Hebrews: Fulfilled in Christ

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: rescue, slavery, free

God's compassionate heart for us His Beloved prompted him to send Jesus, the Better Moses, to rescue and free us from our own slavery in in our own Egypt. In our freedom we can, like Moses, "consider" the two treasures laid out in front of us, the world's and the Lord's, and choose the Greater Treasure of His Kingdom as we deny ourselves and carry our cross because Jesus denied himself and carried our cross.

CENTRAL PASSAGE

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them.

29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned.

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.

Sermon Discussion Questions

Read through Hebrews 11:23-31

  • Talk about the ups and downs of the three 30--year phases of Moses’ life.
  • What did it mean for him to “consider” (v 26) reproach as better than riches?
  • When do we face this type of choice? What does “reproach” mean for you?
  • We all face our own Egypt...what does that mean? What’s yours like? The “slavery” we face...not just before becoming a Christian but in the here and now.
  • Talk abot how modern Christianity has turned into “easy believism” where it’s all about saying a certain prayer or believing a certain thing, but not “taking up our cross”.
  • What does “denying ourselves” look like in real life? Why does Jesus call us to this?
  • How can realizing that I’m The Beloved impact how I live for Christ?
