Hebrews: Closer Attention

Passage: Hebrews 2:1-4

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Hebrews: Fulfilled in Christ

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: christ, scripture, word

God has spoken to us through human-agents called prophet and spiritual-agents called angels, and has now fulfilled his voice by speaking to us through Scripture, which has been passed down with incredible accuracy and reliability, giving us the very words of life and perfectly fulfilled in Christ.

Hebrews 2:1-4
Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

QUESTIONS

When you are in a rough place, what “truths” do you listen to?
How do you discern what is true and what is not?

What “truths” do you hear:
- When you seriously fail
- When someone else really hurts you
- When you are truly afraid
- When you are in pain, in mourning, in a fight

In these situations, what are some of the wrong things you might believe about yourself, God, the world, others, the situation...?
How do we “drift” from truth? What does that look like? Examples?

What is the “gospel-truth” in these situations?

How can we let the gospel-voice overpower the other voices?

What are your thoughts on the accuracy and reliability of the Bible? Why?

Talk about each part of this phrase:
“you are worse than you think,
and more loved than you can imagine
and more instrumental than you could dream”

OTHER THOUGHTS:

Westminster 1.1
Therefore it pleased the Lord at different times and in various ways to reveal himself and to declare that this revelation contains his will for his church. Afterwards it pleased God to put this entire revelation into writing so that the truth might be better preserved and transmitted and that the church, confronted with the corruption of the flesh and the evil purposes of Satan and the world, might be more securely established and comforted. Since God no longer reveals himself to his people in those earlier ways, Holy Scripture is absolutely essential.

David Nienhuis - “(Christians) have been trained to be Bible quoters, not Bible readers...they have the capacity to recall a relevant biblical text in support of a particular doctrinal point, or in opposition to a hot spot in the cultural wars, or in hope of emotional support when times get tough. They approach the Bible as a sort of reference book, a collection of useful God-quotes that can be looked up as one would locate a word in a dictionary or an entry in an encyclopedia.”
