Hebrews: Advent 1 - Love

Passage: Hebrews 6:9-12

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Hebrews: Fulfilled in Christ

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: love, advent, beloved

It is often difficult to truly believe, but we are God's Beloved, and He is ours. All of creation and especially all people are designed to live in perfect love, but love is perpetually elusive no matter how hard we look, no matter how hard we try. In this chasm God proved his Love for us by sending his Son, Love Himself, as our Immanuel, God with us...and speaks powerfully into our hearts that we are truly His Beloved.

CENTRAL PASSAGE:

HEBREWS 6:9-12
9 Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation. 10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  • Prioritize each of the 5 Love Languages for you: Time, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Physical Touch, Gifts
  • How have your priorities shifted over the years?
  • How is it that you tend to love others in the way that YOU want to be loved?
  • This passage is the follow up to the “mid term” exam from last week that felt pretty rough...and he begins with “But, Beloved...” -- why is that powerful? Why is that exactly what we needed to hear?
  • How is our identity as “The Beloved” absolutely essential for us?
    • What changes in life when we DO and when we DON’T remember this?
  • Walk through how God personally loves us in each of the 5 ways.
  • Think about a time when God wasn’t loving you in the specific way you wanted him to and how you may have deduced that therefore God DOESN’T love you.
  • How do you get beyond this false belief?
  • How is Christmas the ultimate “I Love You”? How can you believe and rest in this?
  • God’s love in/for us is never stagnant but pushes through and out...in this passage what are the two avenues of love (v 10) and what can those be our avenues look like in us?
