Freed to Serve

Passage: Galatians 6:6-18

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Galatians

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: freedom, give, grace, missional, outward, serve

The love and acceptance we have in Jesus is absolutely free and organically produces God loving others in the church and in our community through us. As we rest and enjoy our glorious adoption by The King, we will become overwhelmed with thanksgiving, which propels us to Love him back through worship and sacrificially loving others around us with the love that's been given to us. “We are saved by faith alone, but not a faith that is alone.” John Calvin (1547) and Martin Luther (1577).

Sermon Title: Freed to Serve

Central Text: Galatians 6:6-18 ESV

6 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. 7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. 11 See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. 12 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. 14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. 16 And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. 17 From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. 18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

Response: Prayer - Humility In Service (from The Valley of Vision)

LEADER:  O Mighty God, we humble ourselves for faculties misused, opportunities neglected, and words ill-advised.

ALL:  We repent of our folly, inconsiderate ways, and paths of unbelief

LEADER:  Fill us with an over-flowing ocean of compassion, Bury our sins in the cleansing blood of Jesus.  The reign of love our motive and the law of love our rule.

ALL:  O God of all grace, make us more thankful, more humble and work in us a deep sense of our depravity and your daily rescue.

Leader:  Lord Jesus, give us repentance unto life.

ALL:  That faith may adhere us to Christ, that love may entwine itself around us, your Spirit pervading and leading throughout; making known Your grace to all.

Discussion Questions & Applications

1) What difference does (or can, or should) the Gospel make in our everyday life? Why?

2) Analyze these thoughts:

““We are saved by faith alone, but not a faith that is alone.”

(John Calvin (1547) and Martin Luther (1577).)

“What I DO is a result of what I believe.”

So, what am I believing when I put myself over others?

3) Explain these two contrasting belief systems:

“My life for yours” vs “Your life for mine.”

What do these two “faiths” look like in real life?

4) Unpack this diagram:

   Who God is determines

   → What God Does, determines

   → Who We Are, determines

   → What we Do

5) Think about one or two real-life practical ways you can love somebody (maybe through some organization) this month?

Docs & Quotes:

  • “We are saved by faith alone, but not a faith that is alone.” John Calvin (1547) and Martin Luther (1577).
  • “There are two sorts of seeds which men sow in this life, good and evil.  Two kids of sowers, spiritual men, and carnal men. Two sorts of ground, in which this seed is sown; the flesh and the spirit.  Two sorts of harvests, which men are to reap according to the seed; corruption, and life.” ~William Perkins
  • “What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal.” - Albert Pike
  • Human love will always be a faint shadow of God’s love. Not because it is too sugary or sentimental but simply because it can never compare from whence it comes. Human love with all its passion and emotion is a thin echo of the passion/emotion love of Yahweh.
