Encounters: Peter Reconciled (Click here for Resources)

Passage: John 21:1-17

Speaker: Chip Reed

Series: Encounters with Jesus

Category: Grace Brevard

Keywords: reconciliation, shame, forgiven, denial, loved, confronted

The story in John 21, is told in light Peter’s rebellion. Can you imagine how Peter must have been feeling after betraying Jesus? Imagine the shame he experienced? What do you tell yourself when you have denied the One in which you swore your loyalty? What was life supposed to look like now? This story, told as an epilogue, clearly portrays God’s heart once again to pursue and reconcile his people to himself. Where Peter failed, Jesus prevails. And the story does not end there. In Acts 2, Peter (the Betrayer) is powerfully used by God to usher more than 5000 people into the Kingdom! We are also invited into Kingdom work such as this (2 Cor. 5:18-20).

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. Have you ever been betrayed by someone close to you?
  2. Can you identify with how Peter must have felt (shame, embarrassment, fear, anxiety) after he denied Jesus?
  3. Where do you “run” to feel a sense of normalcy/competence in times of crisis/stress?
  4. In what ways are you drawn to the Jesus that John portrays in this particular story?
  5. After seeing how important reconciliation is to the heart of God, what first steps might you take to enter into a relationship needing reconciliation? By the way, that might include your relationship with God himself.
